Oden Annual Issue 6
Theme announcement and call for pitches
HEY Y’ALL
Today we are reaching out to call for pitches for Oden Annual Issue 6: Pacific.
We hemmed and hawed about the theme this year, but ultimately were inspired by the myriad of ways Pacific can be used, as a connection to homeland over the ocean, as a source of food and livelihood, as a place we like to go. It’s a big ocean and a big theme, but one that we feel a big connection to.
Oden Annual accepts recipes, fiction, and essay. Our favorite pitches to receive are thought out and have a voice, so that we can imagine what the final story might feel like.
We’re interested in food stories that get sucked into the whorls of currents or are defined by the ring of volcanoes around the Pacific. We want to talk about wet things, like oysters. Like:
How the Olympia oyster once spanned from Alaska to California but is now a major focus of conservation efforts
Or maybe the conspiracy theory that Dredge Oyster, native to both New Zealand and Chile, traversed the Pacific via a volcanic explosion which sent oyster spat into the jet stream.
The history of ceviche in Peru and the influence that Japanese migrant workers had on modern versions of the dish.
How is the Mexican restaurant scene in Homer, Alaska?
Did your family migrate around the Pacific? How have their food traditions changed to meet local ingredients?
Eating and Drinking aboard Washington State Ferries: the Maritime Tater Tot
Interviews with coastal tattoo artists on what they eat or recommend their clients eat after several hours of pain and focus.
What foods did Julian Dennison miss most when he was working in Hollywood?
Discussing the intricacies of fisheries management with migrating populations across the Pacific.
We’ve tried to make pitches easier this year with the submission form below.
If you’re a visual artist or photographer and would like your work to be featured in the issue, please use the submission form below.
And if you’d like to just send us a pitch or questions by email, we can be reached at odenannual@gmail.com
Please send pitches by Saturday, February 28th for consideration.
We will assign stories by March 20th and final drafts will be due July 1.
We are a small, high quality, print magazine that is entirely put together by volunteers. Our goal is to pay contributors for their creative work and each issue gets us closer to a solid financial footing. Our current compensation is 2 magazines sent to each contributor. We appreciate your co-creating this with us.
We’re excited to dive in to Issue 6: Pacific with you. 🌊
